Antique homemade, handmade & hand forged wrought iron kitchen wood cook stove pie & bread peel with it's original wrought iron handle made from an 18th century ram's horn fireplace peel, round shoulder rectangular peel blade and retaining it's original old lightly oxidized surface, as found. We found this ...charming... pie & bread peel beside the kitchen cook stove. It was used to place, pull out and shift pies and bread in the oven of the cook stove. The handle is a shorten 18th century ram's horn peel handle. The ram's horns are the iron curls at the top of the handle. They are classic 18th century peel decoration and have been highlighted with gold paint. This painting was done at the time of conversion, about 1850-1860. Conversion it was. Peel usage, in the fireplace, was a classic cook's activity that died hard when baking bread moved out of the fireplace an into the wood cook stove in the kitchen. The long handled peel allowed the cook to perpetually fuss with their baking; ever pushing and pulling the bake goods around in the... fireplace brick beehive oven.... to direct their cooking. With the cook stove came a much foreshortened and bent-over-position of fussing and... no peel. Older, traditional bakers were addicted to their peels. That addiction is w this peel comes from. The cook said "I WANT MY PEEL BACK" so demanded a short version be made. The quickest way was to simply reduce the handle length on the old peel by two-thirds, beat out the base of the shortened handle and use that part to re-attach the old peel's blade. That is what was done and an especially careful job it is. The blade is the perfect size and perfectly attached. The handle is angled to push up and under the bread or pies, the it is just the right length for the cook stove oven. AND... they willfully preserved the old ram's horn top handle, even painting it gold, to continue the icon form of the classic peel into the modern Civil War kitchen. We bet the older cook in the family was very pleased to have this veteran workhorse back in her hand to take on that new fangled cook stove! It is the perfect size for fussing with pies or bread in a cook stove oven. Very good as found condition. Noting it's old original surface as a positive feature, the pie peel is in perfect & sturdy condition. Right out of the kitchen, it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine farm residence. Please see photographs. As found last March in an estate in Black Point , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in the kitchen. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this old hand forged kitchen cook stove pie & bread peel for $4.99 NR..
