T is No Reserve for this lot!Document reads as follows: Camp Pierpont Virginia- Saturday Nov. 16th, 1861 Reverend J. F. BoydDear friend & pastor,I received your kind and usually welcoming letter of the 7th inst. on the 11th and today embrace the opportunity to reply. This is the coldest morning we have yet had since we came upon the soil of Virginia. The sky is clear and the sun is shining, but the rough wind is howling through our camp, and the soldiers are wrapped closely in their great coats. Night before last or yesterday it rained almost constantly. Last night it cleared off and froze sharply. We have been well provided with clothing and blankets; which preserve us pretty well from the inclemency of the weather. We have improved our tents, by building three or four rounds of poles, and sitting the tents on them. This addition, closely chunked and daubed on the outside with Virginia mortars makes the tents much more comfortable and roomy. Some have made floors under their tents , by digging trenches, walling and covering them with stones & earth, and leaving open spaces at each end outside of the tents. On one end of the flue a kind of rough chimney is built, and at the other, wood is put in. This arrangement serves to keep the bottoms of the tents dry, and makes them quite comfortable on a day as this. How much longer will we be kept , is still a question with us. The success of the great fleet at Port Royal is gratifying. I need not give details, as you have doubtless read General Shermanâe(tm)s report, & other details. News of a battle at Piketown Kentucky, was cheering to the Union army. First reports it seems were exaggerated. That, also, you see before this reaches you. T was a rumor that the Reserve Corps will be taken down the coast , in the next fleet; but that doubtless, is only rumor. The removal of General Fremont, caused a good deal of excitement at first but I think the greater part of the loyal people will accede to the decision of the Administration, which certainly was not made hastily. The resignation of General Scott and promotion of General McClellan to the command of the entire U.S. A. are changes, also, acceptable to the Northern Army, under the circumstances. The retired veteran carries with him the high esteem of all U.S. citizens. I received one letter from Brother Harrison since he enlisted and went to Kentucky. The news he wrote to me were perhaps about the same he wrote to you. My prayers at a throne of grace are that he may be spared to become a useful man to his country, if it be the will of God to spare him. I trust that I can with unwavering confidence rely upon the promises offered in the scriptures to believers, and say from the heart âeoeThy will be done,âe both with him & me. How often, have I felt, when thinking of the wicked men that hold commissions in many places in our army and the fearful vices practiced by many reckless soldiers, that these evils were too great to be overcome by any but (XXX) tence!
