1861 Cover & Letter - N B Sylvester to James DeckerThis item has three parts:The Cover: Addressed to James Decker Esq in Watertown, New York. The stamp is identified in the Scott catalog as Illustration # A10 Three Cent Washington, Type II. It has a Lowville, New York postmark and the date May 28. The back of the cover is unremarkable.The Letter: A short note that reads as follows - "Lowville 27th May 1861, James Decker Esq, Dear Sir, Mr Edwards suit has been put over thru? circuit so you need not come, Yours ?? N B Sylvester" It is written on the first page of a 4 page letter sheet. The other pages are blank. There is an embossed symbol with a crown in the upper left corner of the stationary.The Enclosure: A Supreme Court Subpoena Ticket printed and sold by Smith, Benton & Co, Rochester, NY. It is the Writ of Subpoena that had directed Mr Decker to appear and testify in an action involving William Edwards and Edmund Leonard. It is signed by N B Sylvester.Three of these four people are prominent figures in New York State history.N B Sylvester: Nathaniel B Sylvester was a prolific author of many books detailing the settlement, geography and folklore of many counties and areas of New York State.
