Up for bid is an interesting Pre Civil War era cover in very good to excellent condition. It is addressed to Doctor George Clymer who was a Surgeon of the US Navy from 1829 to 1866 which includes the Civil War era. There are 2 letters enclosed. The first is from his brother-in-law who expresses concern for him in Washington now that hostilities have broken out between southern and northern states. "I wish you and all the family could be out of Washington also though I suppose there is no longer any danger of attack. Philadelphia was quiet though people there as in all the North and West are in earnest preparation to support the government." He says the slave states are not united among themselves. He talks about the neutrality of Kentucky and the threatened secession of western Virginia from eastern Virginia. He mentions the visit of Jefferson Davis to Richmond. The second letter is from his sister Mary. Her letter is full of family news. Please look below for a brief biography of Doctor Clymer.
