November 25, 1861 Slave Bill of Sale to M.W. Legg of Cleveland TN Handwritten between Maise Blackburn and Meredith W. Legg in consideration of $2500 for Jane age 27, Manda age 12, Alexander age 8 and Margaret age 5. John Henderson further warrants that they are sound, healthy and slaves for life. Signed by Maise Blackburn and Jas H. Rucker Clerk of Court Bradley County Measures approx. 15" x 11 3/4 " completely unfolded This is part of a larger collection of papers that were salvaged and purchased from a teardown in Atlanta. I will be listing many more pieces from this collection all from the lineage of M.W. Legg. Meredith W. Legg (1810-1893) was a settler who worked in a trading post at Ross's Landing, which was the embarkation point of the Cherokee removal on the Trail of Tears in 1837, and in 1838 became Chattanooga TN. The papers and photos to be listed range from the late 1820's through the end of WWII. Included will be checks, correspondence, slave bill of sales, land grants, tuition invoices, CDV photos and much more. A brief overview of the lineage is: The earliest pieces deal with Maj. James Cozby (family later changed the spelling to Cosby), a surgeon in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. His granddaughter Jane Cosby married Meredith Webb Legg, son of W.M. Legg.
