Letter from J J Barnard datelined Bainbridge Berrien County, Michigan July 31, 1862( Letter obviously does not belong with this cover but is from the same correspondence ) Addressed to Otis W Towle South Hampton New Hampshire. Opened neatly at left but soiled and worn around edges from contents.Scrape within postmark, affecting stamp. Backflap intact but damaged. Contents - The superiority of Michigan farmland over that in the east Your letter of the 6 came to hand about two weeks ago and I was very glad to hear from you. I have been so busy haying and cutting wheat that I have not had time to answer it till today.Things out here now look first rate I wish you could be out here and go through our piece of corn it is so tall that you would need a pole to reach to the top of the starks. I tell you it looks differnt from the small stuff you plant in the east.Peaches will soon be ripe now. We will have ripe apples in about one week.I think if you had a farm out here as good as ours you never would want to live in NH again. I had a nice time here the 4th went to Saint Joseph and had a steamboat ride out on the Lake Michigan. I think I enjoyed nyself better read more
