A great Civil War close-up stereoview, "Major General Sumner in the Field, Virginia. The War for the Union. E & H.T. Anthony." This was probably taken at Fredericksburg. Edwin Vose Sumner was born in 1797 and died on March 21, 1863. He was a distinguished Indian Wars fighter against the Cheyenne and others in the west. He led a cavalry charge at Cerro Gordo during the Mexican War and from 1851 - 1854 was governor of New Mexico Territory. Sumner was one of four officers selected to escort Abraham Lincoln to Washington, D.C. after his election. In 1862, he commanded the First Corps of the Army of the Potomac. He fought in the battle of Fair Oaks (wounded), at Antietam w he was also wounded and was in command of one of 3 divisions of Burnside's army at Fredericksburg. He died before he was to assume command of the Department of the Missouri. A unusual close-up in the field, rather than in the studio. A nice uniformed pose next to a tent draped with a large U.S flag. A very scarce view in near excellent condition. See all 3 scans. Buyer pays shipping. Payment by PayPal, money order or check.
