Listing this very good four page letter drom 83rd Indiana Infantry Sergt m, Wilbur F Hitt. Written July 28, 1863 to his brother in Brookville, Indiana. Hitt writes a good letter concerning mostly his regiment and the "Armys" participation in burning, sacking, and pilledging around Jackson, Mississippi! It seems sergt Hitt is a little more than agitated over what was done and he tells his younger brother that "From what you write me, John Morgan(John Hunt Morgan; CS General) must have created quite a scatteration in your midst." "Even if he had passed through Brookville(Brookville, Ind, their home) he could not have been half as destructive as our army makes."(!) "On our expedition to Jackson, Miss the boys pilleged every house on the road, and burned a great part on our outward march, so much that not even a stable could be obtained for the horses."...."You call Morgan a theif, but he could do but little according to letters from there, to what we do." He goes on and was really saddened by the destruction and he says "For a whole day and night the town was burning and it is now but a black ruin of what was once a beautiful city." He does write more concerning the destruction of Jackso and then relates, "We are within 10 miles of Vicksburg and near the railroad which makes it pleasant." Very informative and good letter from a Indiana read more
