1863 UNION Civil War Letter - Camp New Fredericksburg

This is an original Civil War letter, dated January 5, 1863, which has survived in remarkable condition throughout its 144 years of existence. It was authored by Henry Bowersoy and forwarded to Miss Malinda Bowseroy which would indicate that its recipient was not Henry's wife, but rather sister, cousin or niece. Its context appears to be emotional - written out of feelings of remorse that correspondence has not arrived sooner - and that Malinda is anything but "forgotten". The letter chronicles life at Camp New Fredericksburg - spelled by the author as "Fredricksburg". The author places the venue in his own writing as "Camp New Fredricksburg". It lightly details life t and references "sugar balls" as being thrown to the soldiers as Christmas gifts and Henry's own thoughts of Malinda "while laying on the battlefield". The letter is grammatically poor and written in pencil - remaining completely legible - and the envelope is addressed in pen to: Miss Malinda Bowersoy, Middleburg, Synder County, Pa. The envelope is printed on white stock with red and blue ink. It carries the word UNION in a graphic style and features a tree to the left with US flags rendered as foliage on its branches.
