Original vintage Civil War era CDV carte de visite photograph of a beautiful woman wearing a gorgeous dress, taken in Kansas City, Missouri -- and featuring a 3c revenue stamp signed by photographer George Wertz. Tax stamps were required on all photographs sold between August 1, 1864 and July 31, 1866 and were a means used by the federal government to raise money for the war against the Confederate States of America. The 1866 Kansas City city directory sheds light on the relative scarcity of taxed photographs -- that year 260,000 letters were sent from its post office, but only 40,000 photographs were sold by its studios.
