Weighing, 6.221 grams, this US cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, the fourth chief engraver of the US Mint. This copper coin has great historical significance as it traces its roots back to the Coinage Act of 1864 that initiated its production. Interestingly, this 1864 2 Cent was the first coin to bear the legend ‘In God We Trust’, which is now the official motto of the USA. On the obverse side this US cent bears a design of a shield, thereby acquiring the official name ‘Shield Two Cent’. Being the first in its series, this copper coin is a rare collectible.
