1864 softbound book "The Western Sanitary Commission - A Sketch", St. Louis MO 1864. 6 by 9 inches, 144 pages. Has both lithograph engravings, which are like Currier and Ives prints without color. The Sanitary Commission, as Civil War buffs know, was a volunteer organization that provided care for the sick and wounded of both Union and Confederate Armies. This is a very detailed report of their activity following the great western Civil War battles including Vicksburg. The front plain paper cover is mostly torn off, the first 10 pages have a water stain, and the rest of the book is in near mint condition. It was never bound, and is not a pamphlet. This is a rare item, selling for hundreds of dollars on bookfinder, and includes both full page prints.
