Up for auction is a vintage letter with cover that was written at and mailed from Belleville, Illinois and addressed to Professor William Noetling, Selins Grove PA. Letter is between brothers and dated Oct. 29, 1866 and written by what looks like C.H. Noetling. First part of letter is in regards to the Selins Grove brother sending the writer some money, which he used as loans to people in need of it and offered secure security. he talks about the Court session being very busy. Excerpts from the letter............... We attended the great Mississippi Valley fair near St. Louis and there were upwards of 50,000 people present on the day we were there. I never saw such a mass of human beings. The fair was very good. Competition from the whole U.S....We went over in a carriage and drove"into the ground"....Our schools are doing very well, I have sent for school apparatus for the High and Grammar school Departments. Mitchell outline maps (and I think of getting 1 set of Giots maps), 2 Two) 8 inch brass globes, one 12 inch globe...we are in the midst of a political camp here....Governor Oglesby, the Southern Loyalists, General B.F. Butler, General Pyle, Senator Trunbull, General Smith and others have spoken here. And we expect Judge Smith from Philadelphia here, as he is now in the state.
