THREE DAY LISTING. 'The Central Executive Cotton Famine Relief Committee.' A folding print formed from four dissected sections mounted on cloth. When folded the outer sides form original covers of green pebble grain cloth, with a title in gilt lettering on the front. 37cm wide by 28cm, excellent condition. Lithographed by George Falkner, Lithographer, Manchester. 'Originated, Superintended, and the Portraits taken by the Proprietor, Lachlan McLachlan, Manchester. Designed by F.J. Shields, Assoc. Soc. Painters in Water Colours - Painted by Arthur Hughes, London……Published for the proprietor by Thomas Agnew & Sons, 14, Exchange Street, Manchester, 5, Waterloo Place, London, and Exchange, Liverpool.' The print shows the Central Executive Cotton Famine Relief Committee, which brought together the mayors of the affected north west cotton towns who distributed grants of money through the regional committees. The print identifies the individual members of the committee and is taken from a painting designed by Manchester artist Frederick J Shields and painted by Arthur Hughes, which in turn appears to have been painted from a photograph taken by the photographer McLachlan.
