UNCOMMON The Heathen Chinee Plain Language from Truthful James In the Original Envelope BY BRET HARTE ILLUSTRATED BY JOSEPH HULL The Western News Company, Chicago, 1870. Book Condition: Near Fine individual sheets in an about Very Good rare original envelope. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good envelope, illustrated by Joseph Hull. Consisting of 9 illustrated cards with text in the original ornate envelope. The First Edition, following its publishing in The Overland Monthly. Most copies lack the original envelope which here contains the 9 cards. The cards are Near Fine with age toning and a bit of handling soil here and there, but all in all they are nice copies of these cards. The scarce envelope has some splits and tears along the edges (especially along the sides) but each edge is mostly intact. The flap was apparently discarded after the envelope was opened, producing a closed tear to the upper reaches of the envelope's rear. The prior owner's name and the date are written at the top and bottom of the envelope, and there are a couple of ink smudges, apparently from the ink used to sign the signature. None of the writing affects the envelope's text. Intended by Harte to be a satire of the then-prevalent idea that cheap Chinese laborers had a negative influence on the country, it was received by the reading public as racist. read more
