1875 MEXICO Unusual UNLISTED TOKEN Coinlike Obverse C.R.F. LYON Sunburst Reverse This is a very nice and unusual token from Mexico. Dated 1875 and larger than a 25 but smaller than a 50 Centavo piece, the obverse is quite similar to a then current coin. The reverse however, is quite different. It came to me as a "Monetary Button" but does not seem to have any means of mounting or attaching like a button. In the old days, buttons, when the necessity arose, were sometimes used for coins. They could be taken off a uniform or coat and used to pay for something. This may or may not be one of them. Weight: 7.45 Gram, 28 Millimeter, Copper, Brass or Bronze. Obverse: REPUBLICA MEXICANA • Eagle, with Snake in Beak, Standing on a Cactus. Very similar to a coin. All in a dotted border. The symbol of the Eagle, eating a snake, used on many Mexican coins stands for the Aztec legend that foretold they were to make a great empire in a marshy area where they would see a cactus with an eagle eating a snake. The site where this happened is now Mexico City. Reverse: C. R. F. • LYON • Sun Burst in an Oak Wreath. All in a dotted border. The Token: A presentable example, it obviously saw some use as it shows some wear and has a some serious marks, especially on the reverse. I wish I knew more about it.
