During the 18th century, the term nabob came to mean anyone who had become wealthy trading with the East India Company. As a result of their foreign fortunes, these men were often able to return to their native homes (often Britain) and use their wealth and influence to sway the local government into one big, corrupt mess. This image was selected from a collection of woodcuts and steel engravings prolifically depicting scenes from French history, ranging from ancient Gaul to Charlemagne and his wars, to Joan of Arc and Marie Antoinette. Historically important for French archivists, these images are extremely rare to locate and are virtually unseen individually.
