Published by Porter & Coates, 1877. It is a very attractive book with an ornate cover and spine. The book has fabulous full page illustrations! Fascinating Book from the 19th century about the training of the American Trotting Horse. One of the reasons given for writing this book is "its great Superiority to the English System". The author, Hiram Woodruff, also gives many exciting tales of his actual races and of the trotting horses involved throughout America. just one - when "Kemble Jackson" - a chestnut stallion with a white hind-foot, sired by Andrew Jackson, grandson of imported Barbary horse "Grand Bashaw" - beat the favorite "O'Blenis", son of famous "Abdallah" with the biggest crowd watching and most monies paid at the Union course in 1853.
