1877 WHALING BARK PETREL of NEW BEDFORD CREW LIST of 28, ALBERT C. BROWN, MASTER. This is the original crew list document of the bark Petrel of New Bedford, Massachusetts, as she departed on a whaling voyage in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans on July 10, 1877, to return June 19, 1880. The Petrel was built in Mattapoisett, MA, in 1853, and made 12 whaling voyages from 1853 to 1895, all out of New Bedford. The printed form #53, "General Customs Regulations of 1874," is filled out in legible dark ink, listing Capt. Albert C. Brown as master and 27 crew members, beginning with First Mate James N. Claghorn (who would be Master of the next voyage of the Petrel ). The list includes for each crew member's name, place of birth, place of residence, citizenship country, and physical description.The document measures 11-1/2 inches X 18 inches.
