1878 $1 Gold Indian

Pricing & History
1878 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A brilliant Gem Proof. Only 20 Proofs struck. Very rare. Almost exactly equal to another lovely Proof 65 that was offered in our sale in February this year, and a sparkling specimen whose fluid gold color shoots out streaks of radiance from the mirror surface. Since our observation is that this date is always fully struck in Proof (the few offerings we can trace going back 40 years), then this sharp coin has every suggestion of precision manufacture as seen in all devices. In fact, struck with mathematical precision by the dies. While the much-touted 1875 Proofs have similar mintage, this 1878 rarity often gets overlooked, which it shouldn`t. Prospective bidders, as they wend their way through the offerings in this sale in silent admiration during lot viewing, will perk up when they see this lovely specimen. To us, every Proof gold coin of this quality deserves a full market bid. The coin has clearly been preserved with care and admiration by its former owners. Pop 1; none finer. (PCGS # 87628).
