1878-P VAM-40 7/8 Tailfeather 7/5 variety Discovered by George Mallis, July 1964.40 II/I 8 - B/Aj (5 TF) (180) I-4 R-5 Obverse II/I 8 - Type II LIBERTY; doubled P on left and tripled S at top right; partially broken bottom serifs of N and M in UNUM. Doubled 2, 3, 6, and 7 stars on left and 1, 3, 4, and 5th stars on right. 1 and 7 in date doubled at top right. Reverse B/Aj - Five tail feathers ends showing; between 2 and 3, 3 and 4, 4 and 5 and under 5 and 6. Design remain in leaves of branch, below branch on left, and inside left outside of wreath bow. Die chips around R and U in TRUST on some coins. One of six known obverses with a Broken N and M of UNUM, the others being 1878-P VAM-31, 1878-P VAM-110, 1878-P VAM-145, 1878-P VAM-162, and 1878-P VAM-200. The VAM-40 is recognized by PCGS. The VAM-40 is among the more difficult strong 7/8 tailfeather varieties to locate. The II/I-8 obverse is the same used on VAM-31 (weak 7/8TF) and VAM-110 (B2 reverse). The most prominent features of this obverse are the doubled stars and the broken base serifs of the N and M of UNUM.
