An Exceptional Copy of a Beautifully Published Book ~~ Full Page Illustrations by Gustave Dore Throughout! Paradise Lost By John Milton Edited with Notes and a Life of Milton by Robert Vaughan, D. D. New York, London and Paris: Cassell & Company, Limited ~~(No Date; Circa 1880s)~~ ************************************** Folio.329 pages. Hardcover bound in the original brown publisher's cloth with beautiful Victorian cover designs embossed in gilt and in black. The covers have bevelled edges, and the text block has all edges gilted. There is a bit of fraying at the headcap of the spine, and there is a chip in the cloth at the foot of the spine. There is an elongated hole in the cloth at the back hinge, near the foot of the spine. This edition is notorious for its oft poor construction. It is a large, heavy book which was printed on inexpensive paper and which is often found coming apart and with open inner hinges. The front inner hinge on this volume is just starting. The rear hinge is solid. The text is lightly toned but clean. One or two pages may have some edge tears, but overall this is a superior copy to what is usually found. The gilt on the covers is bright, and the illustrations are clean. This is perhaps one of Gustav Dore's most beautifully illustrated works. Let's face it... no one does Paradise Lost like Dore.
