Very rare and original, 1880's Cabinet Card Photograph of Native American Waco - Wichita Indian Chief Buffalo Goad. The portrait Photograph is identified in the negative as simply “Witchita” but has a manuscript identification on the reverse that reads "Chief Buffalo Goad / Wichitas / Ind. Ter.". While the mount does not carry a photographer’s mark, this portrait is a rare but well documented Image taken by J. Gurney in 1871 while Buffalo Goad, the head chief of the Wichita, visited Washington, D. C. as part of a the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Wichita Delegation that met with President Ulysses S. Grant. This rare and original, Cabinet Card Photograph measures approx. 3 1/2” by 5 7/8” and is mounted on its original photographer’s Card Mount (overall size of mount is 4” by 6 1/2”). The card mount is blank back and there is no photographer's mark. This wonderful Card Mount Photo depicts the proud and stoic Wichita Chief wearing formal, western garb. This rare and wonderful, 1880's Cabinet Card Photograph is in very good condition - the focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich. Both the Image and the card mount are clean and crisp and very well preserved.
