Charming, unusual, novelty sewing pincushion with wheel and crank . Made of brass with a dainty, ornate floral motif on each side of the wheel. Four textured legs and sides support the cushion and the wheel and crank. The wheel is still covered with the original red velvet. While the velvet is quite worn, indicating that this was well used, it adds to the overall charm of this unique piece. Made in the Victorian period when the Industrial Revolution made unique items available to the middle class housewives. These figural pincushions were especially prized then and now. While this one was not identified in Sewing and Trinkets, Volume 2, by Helen Lester Thompson, it is in the style of pieces created circa 1870s - 1880s. These pieces were intended to help make 'women's work' less tedious and more enjoyable. While we don't know how much these delightful novelties truly lightened the homemaker's sewing and darning duties, it's great they survived to let us imagine what the sewer's tools included.
