1881 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 63 Deep Cameo PQ. Nice golden toning on both sides. Orange to tawny-gold in color with a bold strike, the surfaces reveal a few scattered faint hairlines. That being the case, this date is also difficult to find fully struck. The present Proof retains needle-sharp detail to the main devices from a strictly above-average strike. Only 87 Proofs struck. Pop 1; 10 finer; 5 in 64; 1 in 65; 4 in 66. (PCGS # 97631) . It was only in 1882-89 that mintage increased markedly over what it had been before in this series of Proofs. It appears there was a short-lived speculative boom that also affected the production levels in the $2.50 and $3 gold issues to a slightly lesser extent before numbers dropped off again..
