A faulty 3ct Banknote stamp franks this cover postmarked December 12, 1881 at East Parsonsfield, Maine and addressed to William McArthur in Limington, Maine. This cover has some wear and tear on reverse. William Miltimore McArthur came from the prominent Maine family - the McArthurs of Limington, Maine. William was born in 1832 and died in 1917. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1853. His brother Arthur McArthur Jr. also graduated from Bowdoin College. When the American Civil War occurred, these brothers, both Bowdoin graduates fought on opposite sides in the war. Arthur was a Confederate Major with the 6th Louisiana Infantry Regiment and served as a Captain with the Union and Sabine Rifles. Arthur McArthur Jr. was killed on May 25, 1862 at the First Battle of Winchester in Virginia at the age of 27.William organized the 8th Maine Regiment at Augusta, Maine and it was mustered in on September 7, 1861 and later mustered out on January 18, 1866. William mustered in as Captain of Company I of the 8th Maine Regiment. William McArthur fought at Fort Pulaski, Cold Harbor, Fair Oaks, Petersburg where he was wounded and at Appomattox Court House. By the war's end, McArthur was brevetted a Brigadier General. After the war ended, William M. McArthur returned to Limington and worked as a Pension Agent and Postmaster.
