Many millions have been melted leaving only 4,000 in MS-65 or better condition! Historical: While it’s known that under the Bland-Allison Act of February 28 th 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was minted in New Orleans from 1878 to 1904; it’s also known that the Pittman Act of 1918 caused the melting and destruction of 270,232,722 Morgan Silver Dollars. George T. Morgan designed the Morgan Silver Dollar and has his ‘M’ monogram at the truncation of Lady Liberty’s neck as well as on the reverse left-hand loop of the ribbon. At a weight of 26.73 grams, .900 silver and .100 copper (net of .77344 ounces of pure silver) with a dimension of 38.1 mm and a reeded edge, the Morgan Silver Dollar was only minted from 1878 through 1904 at the notorious New Orleans Mint (with the ‘O’ mintmark), such as we have with this superb specimen: the 1882 ‘O’ in MS 61, BUT it appears this MS 61 may be an MS 61 O/S if you look closely in the enhanced 3rd photo.
