1882 Decrees by Alexander Stephens as Gov. of Georgia Holiday Proclamations by Governor Alexander Stephens of Georgia 1882 Description:Two ADsS, 1p. 4to., on State of Georgia Executive Department letterhead, Atlanta, November 29, 1882 and December 30, 1882. The first is a proclamation closing "the several offices" of the Executive Department, "In order that the officers and employees in the Executive Department may participate in the national thanksgiving appointed by the President of the United States..." Secretarially signed on behalf of the Governor by J.W. Warren, Secretary of the Executive Department. The second document, dated December 30, 1882, orders "That all public business in the offices of the Executive Department be suspended on next Monday & that the offices be closed" A sentence at the end mentioning the Representatives' Hall is stricken. This document is signed by Stephens a mere 63 days before his death. Alexander H. Stephens (1812 - 1883): Vice President of the Confederacy who urged moderation and negotiation with the Union. Before the war, he was a leader of the Southern Whigs, serving as US Congressman from Georgia (1843 - 1859.) He served in Congress again during Reconstruction (1873 - 1882) resigning in November 1882 after winning the Governorship. He died in office, March 4, 1883. Condition: Usual folds on read more
