United States Military Academy Diploma, 12 June 1882, recognizing the graduation of Charles J. Stevens of New York and recommending him for advancement into the Infantry or Cavalry, signed by the Superintendent of West Point Oliver O. Howard and twelve other instructors including two former Civil War Generals (George L. Andrews and Brevet General Peter S. Michie). Also signed by Patrice De Janon, Junius B. Wheeler, Charles W. Larned, Edgar W. Bass, Guido N. Lieber, Henry M. Lazelle (of the 16th New York Cavalry in the Civil War and a member of General Frederick Steele's staff), Samuel E. Tillman (later Brigadier General, USA), William M. Postlethwaite, Clifton Comly and William S. Stanton, and the adjutant of the class James L. Lusk. Stevens would serve in the cavalry in frontier duty as well as in Cuba and the Philippine Islands, retiring in 1909 as a Major, USA. 24 in. x 19 in. (framed). Custom framed in a simple black which has a few nicks. Diploma is excellent with some blotches of staining and wrinkling of the vellum. The signatures have faded to a rusty brown color but are still completely legible.
