THE COIN PICTURED IS THE ACTUAL COIN YOU ARE BIDDING ON AND WILL RECEIVE!1884-SCollectors have begun to discuss the 1884-S dollar with a reverence normally reserved for the 1892-S and 1893-S dates. At the end of 1975, an MS-65 1884-S dollar was quoted at $1,000 each. At that time, the author was seriously offering, over the national teletype service, $1,500 for a correctly graded specimen. After four weeks (and no sellers) the bid was raised from $1,500 to $2,000. Still no coins or sellers came forward. The conclusions one can draw are: (1) Everyone was waiting for higher prices, or (2) Few MS-65 coins exist for this date.Dealers with years of experience have stated that they have seen only a handful of 1884-S dollars which even remotely approach the MS-65 standards. The theories surrounding this date are numerous. First, many thousands of pieces exist in the grades of Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, and Extremely Fine. The date is almost common in AU-5 and it is available in AU-55. All of this indicates heavy and immediate circulation of the issue.Second, the great dollar melts of 1918-19 and 1944 probably did not seriously deplete this date. (It is noteworthy, however, that even Mr. Redfield did not have an 1884-S piece in his hoard.) Third, the strike was not a particularly good one, especially for San Francisco. It runs from average on some pieces to weak on some others. Fourth, surface abrasions can be plentiful, although lightly marked pieces are seen in MS-60. Fifth, and probably worst, the luster of most 1884-S coins is well below average. It resembles the color of metallic gray, and has low reflectivity.Dealers feel that about one-half of one percent of all surviving 1884-S coins are MS-60 pieces, with virtually no MS-65 coins. This rare situation also exists for prooflike coins of this date. T are none to be seen or purchased.On many occasions, counterfeit pieces are found on the market. The method normally used is to add an S mintmark to the relatively common 1884-P coin.During the Treasury release of silver dollars in 1963-64, t were many mixed bags of 1883-S, 1884-S, and 1885-S dollars grading AU-50 to AU-55. These bags also contained a very few Mint State specimens, which were carefully selected out by experience numismatic “cherrypickers”.(Information contained above is from James B.
