Whatever the exact population of the survivors, there can be no question that many exist today in all grades. Dealers estimate that about 20% of all the pieces they see today bearing this date are either MS-60, MS-65, MS-65+, or MS-65 prooflike.The typical strike for this issue is better than either the 1884-O or the 1883-O, but it is still not a high quality strike. Many strikes can be called average, but a large percentage of Mint State pieces exist with the missing high point details. Either the New Orleans mint used improper striking pressure, or they simply tried to use dies for too long a time.The bagmarks seen on this issue tend to exist in two versions. On regular MS-60 and MS-65 pieces, the abrasions range from few to average. On prooflike pieces, average bagmarks are the rule. The luster situation is adequate, with many pieces exhibiting very high quality coloration.The coin is common in MS-65 prooflike condition. Dealers feel that about seven percent of the Mint State pieces fall into the prooflike category. Cameos exist in some quantity and are in great demand. Most of the fields of these coins do not possess the mirror depth of other issues. Also, many prooflike coins are among those poorly struck.(Information contained above is from James B.
