Original Hand Colored Fern LithographSowerby's Botany ~ 1886 1842. Polypodium vulgare. Original antique fern lithograph with fine hand coloring from the 1886 "Enlarged ... and Entirely Revised" third edition of English Botany; or Coloured Figures of British Plants commonly referred to as Sowerby's Botany . The plates for this edition are by Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892), Nicholas Edward Brown (1849-1934) and John E. Sowerby (1825-1870) , three of the foremost botanical illustrators of the era. The number in the upper right corner is the third edition plate number. Some of the plates have initials followed by a number in the lower left corner that indicates in which publication the plate was initially issued and the original plate number. "E. B." stands for English Botany , "E.B.S." is English Botany Second Edition and "S. B. F." is British Ferns of Great Britain also known as Sowerby's British Ferns . The number that follows is the original plate number. If the left lower corner is blank, then the plate first appears in the third edition of English Botany . Condition: Very good. Any minor imperfections can be seen in the picture. Paper: Heavy weight light cream colored paper that is blank on the back. Size: 6 1/2" wide x 9 3/4" tall.
