Gilbert (1836–1911) and composer Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900). The two men collaborated on fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896, of which H.M.S. Munro, New York. 243 pages, 7x5 inches. Remarkably good condition for such a venerable paperback. Probably made to accompany theater goers in 1886, who were enjoying Gilbert & Sullivan in its heyday. Contains The Mikado, H.M.S Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, etc. Possibly first appearance of at least some of this material--8 operas are included. T is a rubber stamp, L.Y. Ketcham M.D., Druggist and Apothecary.Gilbert, who wrote the words, created fanciful "topsy-turvy" worlds for these operas, w each absurdity is taken to its logical conclusion—fairies rub elbows with British lords, flirting is a capital offence, gondoliers ascend to the monarchy, and pirates turn out to be noblemen who have gone wrong.
