In 1870s Boston, a serial killer raped and murdered several young women. Seen wearing a long black opera cloak, witnesses said he had the appearance of a bat. He was also known as the Boston Belfry Murderer for the killing of young Mabel Young at the Warren Avenue Baptist Church where he was sexton. His first trial ended in a hung jury in December 1875 and he was tried again in January 1876, found guilty and sentenced to be hanged. This official report contains the complete testimony of witnesses for both the prosecution and the defense. Although Piper initially claimed to be innocent, he ultimately confessed just prior to his execution. The text of the warrant for the execution and the sheriff's certification that it was carried out are also included. The index contains lists of names of jurors and witnesses.
