1887 MR JOHN WOODRUFF OF THE HIGH STREET SANDWICH , THE CATTLE MARKET AND WEDDINGTON IS DECEASED. HERE HIS PROPERTY IS ASSESSED FORPROBATE. JOHN WOODRUFF DIED IN 1887. HE HAS TWO ADDRESSES- ONE MUST HAVE BEEN HIS BUSINESS, FOR THAT WAS THE HIGH STREET IN SANDWICH , AND THE OTHER MUST HAVE BEEN HIS HOME, WHICH WAS AT WEDDINGTON, ASH, NEAR SANDWICH IN KENT. HE ALSO HAD A "MOBILE OFFICE" AT THE CATTLE MARKET IN SANDWICH. Here is a rare inventory of a Sandwich/Weddington/ Ash man’s estate and house contents: THIS IS A REMARKABLE DOCUMENT; it is a complete list of effects (furniture) from Mr Woodruff’s home in 1887. In another document, which is not included here, I learned the following: He had many prize cups in Silver which he left to his 8 sons He was a portable office at Sandwich Market He had a mare, dog cart and harness. So He was connected with the Market at Sandwich and a shop in the High Street: was he a farmer?, beef and stock farmer?, butcher?, auctioneer? Or a combination of the above. I guess he was a stock farmer and butcher and that the silver cups came from his prize cattle. This document is his house at WEDDINGTON- ASH THE DOCUMENT MEASURES 13.5 INCHES BY 8 INCHES- FOOLSCAP. It is entirely hand written It is in a black informal script It has two leaves or 4 pages It has been habitually folded into 4 like a legal document It was either prepared by Hicks and Sons, the auctioneers and valuers who were of Market Street Sandwich and disposed of his estate, or by Emmerson the solicitor of Potter street Sandwich, who tied up the legal ends. THE WEDDINGTON HOUSE: Dining Room: Table, arm chair, eight dining chairs, 2 book cases, circular table, couch, carpet & Drugget, Piano , Ladies Table, 2 hassocks, Screen, Fender, Fire irons, Curtains 2 small Arm Chairs. Hall: 3 lamps, Umbrella stand, barometer, 2 chairs, Canvass, 4 mats, Iron Safe AND THE LIST GOES ON ROUND THE HOUSE From drawing Room, to kitchen, Back Entrance, cellar, Scullery, Wash room, Stair Case and landing. South bedroom, dressing Room, South East bedroom, Dressing room, East bedroom, North Room, Lobby, Servants bedroom, Linen, Books, Silver, Plated goods. HERE ARE SOME OF THE MANY INTERESTING POINTS: Brussells carpet (spelling thus) Pier Glass and 6 vases (all in the Drawing Room) 2 Pembrokes in the Kitchen 5 Windsor chairs, Cocoa matting- all the knives listed? There was a filter in the Back Entrance- perhaps one of those Doulton ceramic water filters In the cellar are 5 stillings? And things for the preservation of meat such as a meat safe and slate Pork tub- the latter perhaps for salting pork down. There are two more stillings in the Wash room with a “bass Broom”, shawls and “Line Pails” The Stair is carpeted with stair rods and an 8 day clock. The South Bedroom has mahogany a feather bed and eider downs It has a Dressing Room with washstand and glass and a carpet. The South East Bedroom has the 4 poster bed, feather bed mattress and has its own wash stand Chest, commode and 6 cane chairs But also has a Dressing Room which is used as a bedroom with an iron bed in it The East Bedroom has an iron bed and is not so grand- It has, curiously recorded “a map of the Home Counties” The North Room has an iron Steddall a “ship of felt” and a washstand. Servants have iron beds and a painted washstand- probably of pine or satin walnut. BOOKS: 4 vols Illustrated London News 6 Vols Sporting Magazine Kents Hints- hents Hunts? Kents Hirts???
