A28 The Heroes of the Civil War, published by W. Duke, Sons & Co, 1889.Bound album of tobacco cards, 26 x 17 cm. Fair; paperwraps bound in blue cloth; back cover not present; front cover shows chipping, creasing, soiling, foreedge bottom corner missing. Binding good. Inside contents are complete in good to very good condition; illustrations very bright, clean some toning to image versos. Last page is soiled, more noticeably toned due to back cover having been detached; first page introduction is chipped, soiled corresponding to wrap; small edge tears and nicks to the beginning and end pages; else good.Scarce tobacco card premium offered to early collectors in exchange for a certain number of Duke cigarettes coupons shortly after its publication ca. 1889. Considered one of the more significant 19th century tobacco cards albums, it contains chromolithographic images of all 50 mini-booklet cards of N78 Short Histories of Civil War Generals with short biographies of each Union & Confederate general; includes several full page prints of famous Civil War scenes, headlined by Civil War Commanders U. S. Grant & Robert E. Lee.
