**VERY RARE**c1890 VICTORIAN 12K ROSE GOLD SHELL REPOUSSE LOCKET & CHAIN From my own personal collection I am THRILLED to offer this SENSATIONAL and highly collectable Victorian Repousse 12k Rose Gold Shell locket and fine curb link chain... and it is in BEAUTIFUL antique condition . This is a LARGE LOCKET and measures just under 1 3/8" ... on a 20 INCH CHAIN .. ** IT IS A TRUE ROSE GOLD COLOR .. THAT DEEP PINK SO HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER !! ** It has beautiful carvings that border Repousse Orchids and Fern Leaves with a central Stylized Cross.. and each Orhcid is inset with little gems.. one Pink Stone that looks like a Tourmaline and the other is an old mine cut stone and is either Spinel or a little diamond. White Spinel is known as the "Victorian Diamond" ... The repousse carvings are ornate and this is such a striking piece...and the chain is original to this beautiful heirloom piece ...I purchased this many years ago and have not worn it but kept it wrapped in velvet in one of my jewelry boxes. This is such a nice sized piece and i rarely come across these anymore ...and any dark shadows seen in the photos are simply reflection as this is just so shiny ! HISTORY It is Circa 1890 by design and styling...... This extremely beautiful locket is a TRUE rose gold color. ,that pink rose gold... The locket is 12k rose gold shell front and back.. which means it is a solid outer layer of gold over an underlying metal core to give it strength and durability . It is stamped inside SB & L co .. The inside is rolled gold .. common in these days as gold was expensive so it was not used internally often.. and this would have belonged to a wealthy lady. I added the chain and it is stamped on the end of the chain 12k GF and is gold filled .. .. Antique Gold Fill is considered to be equivalent to todays low karat gold and wears the same. .and this is of high quality as is the locket These complete lockets and chains are so sought after by collectors. The start price is not indicative of its value....lockets such as this one...of this size and lovely condition..obtain very high book prices on antique websites.. DESCRIPTION & SIZING The locket measures just under 1 3/8" including the small bale and it is just under 1 1/4" in width. The patterning on the front is so beautiful . so deeply carved with the Orchids . you can even see the STAMENS that come out of the center of each flower.. and this is a classic heirloom piece. The orchids are set with a little stone.. the left has a pink tourmaline colored stone..and the other side has a clear stone darkened with age.. but I believe they are probably Spinel...very common for these times.. It is a hinged locket and it closes with a crisp snap.. It has a lovely fine curb link chain . .. The chain is fine but it is solid not hollow so it is very strong . The chain measures a lovely 20" in length It has a nice weight to it and is approx 10 grams .!! Please note that the pictures do not show the beautiful antique soft rose gold color and it looks brassy and dull...it was so difficult to photograph as the photos were taken in overcast conditions .. ... Please take your time to view all the photos...as this is simply a beautiful locket. The only fault I can find is that someone has done a gold test on the inside, with a bit of scratching.. and on the back is a small depression, and these were known as teething marks.. as often Victorian Mothers would allow their babies to bite on the gold whilst teething as it was reknown to soothe the gums. It isnt visible when being worn, and adds to its nostalgia and history.and apart from that in wonderful antique condition for its vast age !
