1890S GUSTAVE DORE BIBLE GALLERY ILLUSTRATED PRINTS NR Description: From 1890 or so, a large format illustrated classic, The Dore Bible Gallery, containing 100 Illustrations, and a page of explanatory letterpress facing each. Illustrated by Gustave Dore, and published by Hurst & Co., New York. No date, but clearly 1890s. Bound in brown cloth at the spine, with a chromo-lithograph on the front board, and an illustration on the back board as well. Sized 12x9 inches. No page numbers, but t are 100 prints, as stated above. Some of Dore's most famous work, heaven and hell, devils and angels.A very good copy, a small abrasion on the spine. The paper covered boards have held up surprisingly well.Paul Gustave Doré (January 6, 1832 –; January 23, 1883) was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving and steel engraving.Doré was born in Strasbourg and his first illustrated story was published at the age of fifteen. At age five he was a prodigy artist already creating drawings. When he turned 12 he began to carve his art in stone. Doré began work as a literary illustrator in Paris. Doré commissions include works by Rabelais, Balzac, Milton and Dante. In 1853 Doré was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron.
