1890s Victorian Windowpane Plaid Silk Day Dress Contentment Farm Antiques is a smoke free, pet free environment. Dating to the very end of the 19th century, about 1898 or as late as 1901 this two piece dress is in very good to excellent condition. The fabrics are silk with the main fabric being black and white in a very small windowpane plaid pattern. The skirt ruffle, front plastron and sleeves are made from the same solid black silk. The bodice is lined in a black cotton twill with boning in the front and sides (front boning will need to be tacked back in place at the top). Front closure is with hooks and eyes for the pleated plastron and black glass buttons below (one is different from the others but a period correct replacement). The skirt is lined in black polished cotton that also makes up the waist band that closed in back with a single button. Hemline is lined with a sturdy woven fabric (horsehair?) and a velvet floor sweep. Tight gathering is found in back however it appears to have been let out on the right side probably to fit the wearer. The condition as already mentioned is very good to excellent. T is one small break in the silk on the bodice that measures about 1.5" long. Otherwise the silk is strong and is free from shattering and dry rot. As supple as the day it was made. No stains or odors noted. A very wearable read more
