Up for auction is the complete two-volume set of an antique ornithological reference, entitled A POPULAR HANDBOOK of the ORNITHOLOGY of the UNITED STATES and CANADA, Based on Nuttall�s Manual , by Montague Chamberlain. Published in Boston by Little, Brown and Company in 1891. Volume I covers �The Land Birds,� while Volume II covers, �Game and Water Birds.� A richly illustrated guide, with color lithographed frontispieces in each volume. 473pp; 431pp. Books are bound olive green cloth with elaborate early Art Nouveau gilt-stamped decorations on cover and spine. Top page edge gilded. The set used to belong to a library long ago, but the evidence is scant; there are the remnants of labels on the spines, but these are amenable to being scraped off; indeed, the one on the second volume is entirely absent. No markings inside, save for the word �discarded� written in pen on the endpapers. Cloth rubbed with wear at the heads of the spines, but hinges firm, and set in GOOD PLUS condition overall. 04.11.023
