Illustrated with approximately 30 illustrations. Bound in decorated gray cloth with gilt titles. Boards are lightly stained and rubbed and worn to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks and the binding is tight and solid. Egerton was an itinerant missionary in the remote part of Manitoba in the 1870s and 1880s. This is the first of his many books. "Its illustrations, with other images from many sources, provided the basis for a large collection of lanternslides to stir audiences and promote missions" From the Internet: For those interested in the nineteenth century in the wild backwoods of Canada this will be a most important book. Reverend Young and his wife were appointed to a large region of Northern Canada, and quickly learnt to travel by canoe in the summer and by dog-train in the winter. To visit their flock they had to travel extensively by these means.
