Offering this beautiful old framed engraving of Immo and Hildegard, done in black and white. Black wood frame, protective glass covering. Old wood cover on back, wire hanger. Details are wonderful, very romantic! Overall measures 11 1/2" x 9 1/2", print size is 8 3/4" x 6 1/4". This engraving is from the book 'Character Sketches of Romance, Fiction, and The Drama, published & printed in 1892. Included on the back is part of the original onionskin page that covered the engraving - it reads" As the sun went down, it threw its golden light over the heights on which Ingeborg stands,. On the highest point within the castle wall stands a linden-tree that makes a thick arbor with its broad leaves. Here sat Hildegard, the Count's daughter, her hands folded in her lap as she looked down into the vally. Her lips stirred, and as softly she sang the words of a holy hymn, it seemed to her that her song was echoed from above her in the tree. "I am lying here above thee on the green leaves", came down to her overhead, and at the same instant Immo thrust his head out quickly, and throwing his arm around her neck, he kissed her', (from Gustav Freytag's The Wrens Nest). Good condition, no tears or holes or stains (glass covering has tiny piece missing at top right corner, does not detract). A beautiful piece of art for any decor!
