Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1892. Two volume set, octavo, gilt stamped cloth, lxxvi + 208 pages + vi + pages 209-465. Izaak Walton (1593-1683) was an English writer best known for his treatise on Fishing, The Complete Angler . Blessed with a long life, Walton enlarged his original 1653 edition with addendums collected over the course of 30 years of leisure and sport, so when his fifth edition was published in 1676 the text had grown from 13 to 21 chapters with a section concerning fly fishing authored by Walton’s friend and fellow fisherman, Charles Cotton . Perhaps the most popular fishing treatise ever published, The Complete Angler has been fortunate in the editors who have managed its continuation in print and the authors who have written introductions for it: one of the most notable of these was James Russell Lowell , the American Romantic Poet who wrote the introduction for this set now offered for your consideration, the1892 printing, nicely illustrated, of Walton’s timeless treatise on Fishing: The Complete Angler, or the Contemplative Man’s Recreation.
