Here is a RARE opportunity to own a scarce Dolly Varden topsy turvy doll! This doll is one of my most cherished objects and is difficult to part with, however my collecting tastes have changed. Please understand that these dolls were very inexpensive when new, and are exceedingly difficult to find today. I have seen a handful of the regular Dolly Varden dolls with legs, however topsy turvies are very rare...this is only the second example I have ever seen. Not only is the doll rare, but the condition is excellent for its age with no fading with little wear. The doll measures approximately 10" in overall length, from hat to hat. These dolls were so cheaply made that were often made without arms, as is the case with this particular example. The arms are not missing...they were never made. The faces are made of embossed cardboard with lithographed paper...the white face is marked "Patent No. 18588." The black face is merely the white face that was hand-painted with black features (original). The only damage is a small scuff to one cheek on the black doll. The clothing consists of a cheap printed gauze skirt in a red print, and ruffled gauze around each face to simulate bonnets. There may be an age stain here and there, however these dolls are extremely difficult to find. She is excelsior/sawdust-stuffed. read more
