The title page reads in part : "The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. By Charles Darwin, M.A., LL. D., F.R.S.. With Additions and Corrections from Sixth and Last English Edition. In Two Volumes. With Illustrations. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1896." 2 of 2 volumes complete Verso of title page states : "Authorized Edition." The volumes are 8vo (8 X 5 inches); hardcover; ; ex-library; volume one has red cloth library binding with gilt titles & shelf numbers on spine; volume two is 1/2 red morocco on marble boards with gilt titles on spine and faded shelf numbers; spine leather of volume 2 is darkened, dry, & cracked; bindings soiled, rubbed & worn on edges; both volumes have several library ink stamps on title pages, remnants of library card holders & due date paste-downs inside front boards & on front endpapers; small tears on front end-paper of vol.2 where paste-down was removed; braile-like library blind stamps on some text pages; minor pencil notations scattered throughout; vol.1 has ink underlings on four lines of page 69; minor age toning; text blocks tight; 365 + 339 pages + folding plate in vol.1.
