An enamel beaker for Czar Nicholas II Coronation (1896), known as the cup of sorrow or the Khodinka Cup. 18 May 1896, by 4 am tens of thousands people gathered on "Khodinka Field", Moscow to celebrate the coronation. They knew about free beer, gifts. This cup and gifts were wrapped in coronation handkerchief. People started moving toward free buffets, but on their way were many ditches, trenches and wells covered by wooden boards. Everybody was moving in the same direction. Those who were behind pressed the people in front. Many of them fell and were ran over by mob and stomped to death. By 8am 1,138 were dead. The coronation went ahead anyway. The beakers are enamel over tin and they are all chipped to some extent. This one is in fairly good condition with some expected chipping to the rim area. The body and base are in very good condition.
