THE COIN PICTURED IS THE ACTUAL COIN YOU WILL RECEIVE! 1899-S The 1899-S Morgan dollar is certainly one of the key date coins in the series, but it has never enjoyed the position of being very popular with collectors and investors. The original mintage was a modest 2.5 million coins – it was not one of the large San Francisco issues. The overwhelming majority of the original coins did not survive the melting in 1918-19 and 1942. Of the relatively few coins seen today bearing the 1899-S hallmark, no more than 2% are in mint condition. Over half of these are MS-60 specimens due to some strike difficulties. Much of this issue can be considered adequate with regard to strike quality, but a number of pieces are somewhat flatly struck on the reverse only. Luster quality is better than passable and bagmarks are found in a range from average to minimal. LaVere Redfield’s now-famous collection of over 400,000 Morgan and Peace dollars contained more than one bag of 1899-S dollars, according to the shop talk heard at leading coin shows. If true, this quantity is hardly large enough to greatly affect current price trends for this date. As indicated above, the 1899-S dollar has a substantial circulated population. Many of these show only light circulation, or cabinet friction, as some dealers prefer to call it. It is common to see these pieces advertised as MS-60 or MS-65 specimens. Beware of these coins. This is one of the most abused dates with regard to “supersliders” being sold as Mint State coins. This date is somewhat plentiful in brilliant prooflike condition. Most of the specimens carry only a minimal amount of surface abrasions and nicks. Cameos are extremely rare. The typical 1899-S MS-65 prooflike coin sells for 50% more than the BU MS-65 piece. Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon.
