I purchased this button in the 1980's from one of the nations premier button dealers, Margot Jacoby of New York. The button was made of brass during the 18th century. The interesting and rare part regarding this button is the inner green ring is not leather or enamel, but SHAGREEN or Sharkskin Veneer. A stamped brass button back has a center nail head surrounded by a stamped metal (blackened brass ?) patterned ring surrounded by the shagreen circle. During the latter part of the 18th century the technique of applying shagreen to small items never before managed was accomplished. This is one of those pieces. A very Rare button. Measures just at 3/4". A wonderful button in very fine condition considering it is over 225 years old. Shipping by Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation every Saturday after receipt of payment. Recommend optional postal insurance. Seller will not be responsible for uninsured packages; lost or damaged. Check my other auctions and my store for extraordinary buttons from my personal collection. I will continue to sell button stock from my inventory, but I have decided to sell parts of my collection as well.
