An excellent late 18th / early 19th C. wrought iron rush light candle holder. This was made for use with both rushlights and small candles. Rushes or the pith of cane or similar reeds were soaked in fat or grease and burned for light. These were more commonly found in New England and were a very primitive form of lighting. Rushlights were burned in peculiar holders such as this, so that the unburned portion could be curled up, straightening it out as it was consumed. This example is in very good condition, with some rusting and light pitting. The shaft is wonderfully twisted and the base is tri-footed with penny feet. This is a very versatile piece, with two different types of lighting available. It measures 12 1/2" tall, the feet are 7" apart and the top part is 3 1/4" wide. The candle holder can fit a candle 3/4" in diameter. A rare form of early American lighting to add to any collection. Please see my other auctions for more great early primitives and folk art (pictured). Payment expected within 7 days of auction's end, item will be shipped UPS ground. Insurance is included in the price listed for shipping. International bidders, please contact me for a shipping quote.
