This watch is made by Thomas Harben (1736>> 1803) the son of the famous clock maker Thomas Harben senior (1707 >> 1766) who had his workshop in the Sussex town of Lewes. The watch is numbered 4893 and seems to be made of a base metal (possibley brass) .There is no date on this watch but as Thomas junior went into Banking in 1782 and in 1783 was buying light gold and was also registered to trade in silver and jewelry (amoung other things) its possible that this basemetal watch was an early one. The watch case which looks like it is guilded on the inside ( there are also traces of guilding on the outside) has a "W.B" stamped on the inside of the back and this could be for Walter Brind of London who was using this mark between 1748 and 1780 on silver watches. Thomas junior was into politics in a big way and was made a freeman of Seaford in 1785, at various times he also served as Bailiff, M ayor and Magistra te and appears to have been adapt at a bit of gerrymandering. Please note. On the W.B mark the . should be set halfway up b etween the W B. Paypal only p lease. Despatch within two days.
